S13 stayed up until Obama's speech. So it was almost 1:00 am here. He has to get up at 6:00 am to catch his bus to middle school. I told him he had my permission to sleep through Social Studies. If his teacher complained, he was instructed to tell her that decades from now he is more likely to remember watching Barack Obama get elected than anything he learned in class today.

I'm still trying to take it all in.

I vacillate between emotions of euphoria, pride and a feeling of redemption.

I am proud to be a part of this place in history.

I was only six years old when Martin Luther King spoke his I have a Dream speech.

Last night, I was able to see President-elect Obama's acceptance speech in the company of my family, and the significance, the eloquence, the significant steps we have taken as a nation.

Colin Powell, Nelson Mandela, Condalezza Rice, Lucas King and Jesse Jackson...

To see in their eyes the significance of this turn for our country, and for us as a people...

To see where we have been in our brief United states history, and how far we have come.

I just have such great feelings of pride tonight. How far we have come. And how far we need to go.....

This election cycle has been interesting in our household. My 16yo said he supported McCain. My 12yo supported Obama. Where I live, that put him very much in the minority. There were many reasons I was hesitant to vote for Obama/Biden, mostly because of things they said during the campaigns. Even Biden said that Obama was not ready to be president during primary debates. Early this summer, Biden said that he would be honored to be McCain's running mate.

I heard an Obama supporter interviewed this week about Obama's win. She was thanking God for Obama and she said she "wouldn't have to worry now about putting gas in her car or paying her mortgage." With supporters convinced of those things, I'm not at all surprised at the outcome. You got to give Obama credit for outcampaigning Clinton and McCain.

I have a bit different take from J on the 'historical' nature of this election. I think it was important to give the kids the option of staying up to watch. My 12yo went to bed before the election was called pretty satisfied that Obama would win. My 16yo wanted to stay up until it was called (he fell asleep waiting). Of events I watched on television in my lifetime, I place this election night up there with the moon landing, MLK and RK assasinations, the Challenger explosion, and 9/11/2001. I wasn't really old enough to remember anything about the JFK assasination.

And G-man, I don't recall any celebrations marking the historic achievements of Rice, Powell or Justice Thomas. No big support for ambassador Keyes during his runs for president or senate. I guess they were affiliated with the wrong party.

Yes we can, continue to work hard for our families and communities and support them to the best of our abilities. The sun still came up in the east Wednesday morning, I have a beautiful family, and I support the mission of whoever is in the Oval office in my job. Smile Oh, and coming from a 'battleground' state, thank goodness the campaign commercials are done! Laughing

Geesh.. I got no less than 4 campaign phone calls a day for the 3 days before the election. (one was a recording of Matt Damon, another Scarlett Johanssen.. and even one recording of Obama himself! along with various real humans as well)

I always get annoyed with candidates as a whole.. cause as elections draw nearer their facts get a little fuzzier and the soundbites get a little more farfetched from the reality of what is probable and alot more rhetoric/jingoistic.

But that aside.

It was a momentus occasion.. a very well written speech and Obama is very charismatic and a good speaker.

I do hope he will be a president that will be fair, strong, non biased and if nothing else.. a quick learner. He's got alot of that ahead of him!!

I don't believe I saw a single presidential campaign commercial here in CA. I loathe repatative commercials so I sympathize with you guys.

I think Sarah Palin campaigned in S.F. a few weeks back but I have no idea why.
